What younger people can learn from older people about technology.

In Western cultures, which are obsessed with what is new, novel, innovative, and futuristic, being old is often perceived as a shortcoming, and the elderly in such cultures are often shown as irascible, depressed, decrepit, senile people who have lost their joie de vivre. English literature is replete with negative images of old age. Take, for example, the doleful Jacques in Shakespeare's As You Like It, who paints old age in a negative light when he declares that the final and most dismal age is that of “second childhood and mere oblivion, sans teeth, sans eyes, sans taste, sans everything.” Then there is La Rochefoucauld, who viewed most old people as making a mess of their age and wasting their time, or letting time waste them. Matthew Arnold's perspective of growing old doesn't shine a positive light on old age either. In his well-known poem “Growing Old,” he laments the loss of physical beauty and physical strength. For Arnold, old folks are trapped in their bodies l...

How Spying on your parents.

Surveillance technology is raising privacy concerns around Australia but it may also allow older people to stay in their own homes for longer. Chris Ketts is the primary carer for her 87-year-old mother, Jean Johnston, despite living in a different state. Without texting or calling, Ms Ketts knows if her mother has opened her container of epilepsy medication or if she hasn't left the lounge room for a while. And although she is more than 300 kilometres away, Ms Ketts knows the moment her mother gets out of bed.

Technology is a mystery to my mom.

Technology is a mystery to my mum – if we’re so clever, let’s invent things to make the lives of the elderly easier While modernity gallops on  making life simpler, more exciting, more immediate for the young, the needs of the old are being completely ignored. I’m back home with mother. This is a temporary arrangement both of us are very relieved to report. She has just had a cataract done and out of her three children, I’m the kindest. Oh, and the only one with a flexible freelance job. My brother is a criminal defence barrister and my sister is an adjudicator (no me neither) and apparently both of these jobs, you know going to court and helping make decisions which affect people’s future lives, are more important than showing off for a living. Anyway, I’m in novel writing mode at the moment and have a laptop so I can travel.
